Today is World Environment Day — a moment to reflect on the steps we’re taking towards a more sustainable future.
At Palm Beach Currumbin State High School, sustainability is more than just a value; it’s part of our culture. We are proud to share some of our environmental achievements, driven by the dedication of our staff, students and community.
Food Waste Reduction
Since installing our composting machine in late 2020, we’ve composted more than 29,000kg of food waste from both our school and local community. This effort has produced approximately 8,000kg of compost, which has been donated to the Southern Beaches Community Garden in Tugun.
In 2024 alone, we diverted 7,900kg of food waste through our on-campus composting system — helping to reduce our environmental footprint and support local initiatives.
Container Deposit Scheme
Through our ongoing container deposit program, we’ve achieved outstanding results:
In 2024, we returned over 72,000 beverage containers, raising $7,200 for the school.
Since the program launched in 2018, we’ve recycled more than 230,000 containers, earning over $23,000.
We were honoured to be named the 2024 Containers for Change Queensland School of the Year.
Reducing Waste to Landfill
Thanks to our waste separation and recycling efforts, in 2024 we sent 1,200 fewer wheelie bins of general waste to landfill compared to 2023. This not only benefits the environment but also resulted in a saving of more than $20,000 in waste disposal costs.
We’re proud of these milestones and remain committed to improving our sustainability practices every day.
