Another key focus area at PBC is the responsible disposal and recycling of electronic waste.
To support this, we have introduced a dedicated e-waste collection bin on campus to ensure that old or broken electronics are recycled or repurposed instead of ending up in landfill.
Electronic items contain valuable materials such as metals, minerals, and plastics that can be recovered through specialist recycling processes. By recycling these resources, we help reduce the demand for new raw materials and minimise the environmental impact of electronic waste.
Eligible items for recycling include:
Mobile phones, tablets, and laptops
Keyboards, computer mice, and accessories
Stereos, CD/DVD players
Electric toothbrushes and beard trimmers
Broken appliances such as blenders, toasters, vacuums, and power tools
Cords, chargers, and cables — essentially, anything with a power cord or battery
All collected items are picked up by Substation33, a social enterprise based in Kingston that repurposes e-waste into innovative new products. Their projects include transforming discarded materials into Bluetooth speakers, electric bikes, and battery banks that supply power to homes in energy-poor regions such as Indonesia.
Through this partnership, PBC students are not only helping to keep e-waste out of landfill but are also contributing to social and environmental projects that create real-world benefits on a global scale.
In 2025, PBC ran its first E-waste Recycling Competition, inviting students to bring in small electronic items for responsible recycling. The response was outstanding, with more than 540 e-waste items collected — ranging from chargers and adapters to larger appliances like vacuums, microwaves, stereos, and TVs. This strong participation marks an excellent start to what we hope will become an annual event, as we continue to build awareness and action around sustainable waste management.
