At Palm Beach Currumbin State High, we’re proud to have passionate educators who go beyond the classroom to inspire, support and guide our students.
From student to Head of Year 12, Mr Will Johnstone’s journey at PBC is one marked by connection, culture and a deep commitment to student wellbeing and growth. We sat down with him to learn more about his story, teaching approach and life beyond the classroom.
Background & Experience
What made you decide to become a teacher? I loved going to school as a kid and it was some of the great teachers that I had that inspired me to want to become a teacher myself. I had a couple of great teachers who now teach at Miami High School (Rob Peterson and Lee Wilkinson) who made school really fun. I also had some great mentors when I went to school at PBC who I made great connections with and made me want to come back as a teacher!
Was there a particular teacher who inspired you growing up? When I was a student at PBC I was taught by the great Rod Patison. Rod always had so much wisdom to share even though sometimes I may not have fully understood what exactly he was trying to teach me. I also loved having Phil Sutherland, Ben Falvey and Aaron Zimmerle as teachers. I’m lucky enough to get to work with Zimmo and Falvey now and they were two men who inspired me to want to become a teacher.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job? Getting to help students every day and hopefully help shape them become better humans. Seeing smiles on kids faces every day keeps you coming back!
What’s the biggest lesson teaching has taught you? You never know what is happening in someone’s life so be kind to one another!

Classroom & Teaching Style
What’s a memorable moment or success story from your teaching career? Working in the Rugby League Excellence program has given me the chance to support some outstanding young athletes. Being part of two National Titles on the support staff is something I’ll never forget. All those kick-catch sessions with Beau Hartmann definitely paid off.
How do you keep students engaged and motivated? By learning what they enjoy and where their strengths lie. If you can connect the content to their world, they’re much more likely to stay engaged.
What’s your favourite thing about working at this school? The Reds culture. There’s a genuine sense of pride and community here—teachers want to be here, and I’m proud to be a Red.
