Returning to school after a holiday can sometimes take a little adjustment. Changes in routine, sleep patterns and daily habits are completely normal, and many students need a short period to settle back into learning. This is also an ideal opportunity for families to reset expectations and support positive routines for the term ahead.

Below are some simple and practical ways parents and carers can help their child transition smoothly back into school life.

Prioritise attendance from day one

Every school day matters. Establishing strong attendance habits from the beginning of term helps students stay connected, engaged and confident in their learning.

At PBC, our attendance target is 92%, reflecting the importance of consistency in supporting academic progress and wellbeing.

Start the day with a nutritious breakfast

A healthy breakfast plays an important role in preparing students for learning. It supports concentration, energy levels and emotional wellbeing, helping children start the day in the best possible way.

Be organised and prepared

Preparation reduces stress and helps students feel ready for the day ahead. Encouraging your child to organise uniforms, school bags, devices and stationery the night before can make mornings calmer and more efficient.

Talk positively about school

Conversations at home can have a powerful impact on mindset. Talking positively about school, friendships, subjects or activities helps students feel more connected and enthusiastic about returning.

Even small discussions about what they enjoy or are looking forward to can help build confidence and motivation.

Encourage a ‘ready to learn’ mindset

It is natural for students to feel a little sluggish after a break. Gentle reminders about effort, focus and participation can help reset expectations and encourage a positive approach to learning.

A supportive message such as “just do your best today” can go a long way in building confidence.

Limit screen time in the evenings

Reducing screen use before bed supports better sleep quality, which in turn improves mood, concentration and readiness for learning the next day. Establishing consistent evening routines can make mornings easier and more positive.

Stay connected with the school

Open communication between home and school is key to supporting student success. We encourage families to stay up to date with school communications and to reach out early if any concerns arise. Early connection often leads to the best outcomes.

Our shared expectations

At PBC, we encourage all students to follow our Optima Code:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be a Learner

These expectations guide behaviour, relationships and learning across our school community.

Supporting students as they transition back into school after a break is a shared effort between home and school. With consistent routines, positive conversations and strong communication, we can help every student start the term with confidence and purpose.
