Operating since 2020, PBC’s Community Composting Program has played a key role in reducing food waste and supporting local sustainability initiatives. The program has successfully diverted more than 5,000 kilograms of food waste from landfill through a community collection bin located at Gecko House. This bin is maintained by volunteers from the Southern Beaches Community Garden (SBCG), who collect the food waste and deliver it to the school for processing in PBC’s on-site composting machine.
This collaborative initiative not only reduces the amount of organic waste sent to landfill but also strengthens community engagement in environmental action. It provides a practical way for residents to contribute to sustainability efforts and demonstrates how schools and local organisations can work together to make a tangible difference.
The compost produced from this process is a valuable resource. Of the more than 8,000 kilograms of compost generated through our machine, most has been donated back to the Southern Beaches Community Garden. There, it is used to nourish the plants across more than 100 raised garden beds, helping the community grow fresh produce while closing the loop on local food waste.
Through the ongoing success of the Community Composting Program, PBC continues to foster a strong sense of environmental responsibility and collaboration between the school and the broader community.
