This week we’re shining a spotlight on Mr Ryan Jesser, our dedicated and passionate Head of Year 11. With a career shaped by strong student relationships, adaptability, and a genuine love for helping young people grow, Mr Jesser brings warmth and wisdom to the PBC community.
1) What do you love most about being a teacher?
What I love most about being a teacher is seeing the students develop new skills and grow not just academically, but as people. Every day brings new challenges and surprises, and I enjoy building meaningful relationships with students and helping them realize their potential. It’s a privilege to be part of that journey.
2) What’s the biggest lesson teaching has taught you?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned while teaching is that every student learns differently, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. What works for one student might not work for another, and that’s okay. It’s taught me the importance of patience, flexibility, and really listening. Sometimes, the most powerful teaching moments happen when I step back, adjust my approach, and meet students where they are. It’s a constant reminder that teaching is as much about learning from my students as it is about teaching them.

3) What’s a memorable moment or success story from your teaching career?
The most memorable moment for me so far in my Career would be graduating the students from the Class of 2023. I had the privilege of being their Head of Year from their very first day of High School in Year 7 right through to seeing them graduate. This was a very proud moment for me and one that I will never forget.
4) What’s your favourite thing about working at this school?
My favourite thing about working at this school is the strong sense of community. There’s a real team spirit here—among staff, students, and families—that makes it such a supportive and positive place to be. Everyone genuinely wants the best for the students, and that shared commitment creates an environment where both teaching and learning can thrive.

5) What’s the best advice you’ve ever received about teaching?
The best advice I’ve received about teaching is to focus on relationships first. Students learn best when they feel seen, heard, and respected. Building trust and connection creates a foundation for everything else—engagement, motivation, and even discipline. It’s also important to remember that teaching isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being reflective. Always be willing to adapt, learn from your students, and grow alongside them. Every class, every day, is a chance to do just a little better than the day before.
