Year 9 Australian Business Week Experience

9/12/2013
Ruby Blair explaining health benefits to Tracey Veale,
In the 2nd to last week of school, Academic Excellence Year 9 students participated in Australian Business Week. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills:
  • Finance, operations and marketing
  • Problem solving
  • The importance of teamwork and mutual respect
  • Meeting deadlines and coping with stress
For one week, the students ran up to five virtual cafes per team. They competed against one another to gain market share, increase their performance index, work out staff and management salaries and bonuses, overheads and costing. Decisions were then fed into a computer that provided feedback and projections for the following quarter.

On top of this heavy workload, students also had to create a trade display, a written annual report, a spoken delivery to possible investors and shareholders, and a video ad.

However, the final Friday where everything was due culminated in the Gala Dinner. Teams and invited guests had a formal evening of beautiful food and more importantly, awards announced. Congratulations to the Green Team, Bean on the Green, the overall winner for 2013. Green also won the Oral Report and the Simulation categories. Further commendation for the Black team, Café de Noir, who won the Trade Display, the Written Report and the Video Ad. And of course the Red team who won the Teamwork award.
