Year 7 Debate Development

Following from the Debate Development Day for Year 7 students at PBC, the Great Debate Competition took place on Tuesday, 19 March. Eight teams of Year 7 students from Currumbin Primary, Currumbin Valley, Tallebudgera and Palm Beach arrived at PBC in the morning for two rounds of debating.

Each team created strong arguments both for and against in the following topics: Public transport should be free, Technology has made teachers obsolete, Community Service should be compulsory and Truth is more important than happiness. Arguments were supported by sourced research as evidence and all Year 7 students adhered to the protocols of debating due to excellent coaching from their teachers.

This made the judging difficult. Scores were extremely close; many teams only separated by one point. Chief adjudicator, Shirley Lord, made the onerous decision and awarded the trophy to Tallebudgera; a well-deserved win. However, all teams were winners on the day. If this year’s year 7 students are anything to go by, the Great Debate trophy will be hotly contested in 2014.
